Ahahah, yes - you've hit the nail on the head. They're perfect foils for each other, really; each without the other is horribly imbalanced, but they're so terribly good for each other. And I think that, even at the time the book's taking place, they do really know it. By the end, granted, they really know it. That much is clear. I think it's why we're all so willing to bet our fannish lives on what happens next ;)
