Thank you! I took my cues from the thugs we see in "Helpless", then backed them up about 20 years. WWII veterans in a grubby time, an era when Britain had domestic terrorism. I wasn't thinking Le Carre consciously, but indeed Smiley was probably in the back of my mind.
