I'm honestly not sure if Snape has learned anything or not -- Petunia has such an unrelentingly negative view of him that it's hard to interpret his actions and emotions from her POV. I'm glad you liked the photographs. They were an unexpected bit of prop business; originally I had only meant for Petunia to give Harry a few old family photographs in part 4, but then I was hit by the idea of one picture being passed back and forth and down the generations, and I had to include it. (The photo was also a cheat for me to sneak Snape into sections where he would otherwise have had no reason to even be mentioned.)
I figure that if I'm going to bother humanizing Petunia, I kind of have to humanize Vernon as well, so as to explain why she married him. :-)
