I have liked Petunia for a long time (as a character, not necessarily as a person), mostly because while the early books never made a big deal of it, I always saw her primarily as Lily's sister, which meant I viewed her emotions and actions as expressions of anger and jealousy toward Lily rather than toward Harry alone. While that does not in any way excuse her actions, it does make them (for me) a lot more understandable.
